George Smith was born in 1870 in Mid-Calder in Mid-Lothian. He studied art at the Board of Manufacturers School, Edinburgh and subsequently at Antwerp under Charles Verlat. 

He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, The Royal Academy and the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art.

His work can be found in several public collections in Scotland, including the Royal Scottish Academy and the Paisley Gallery. Examples can be viewed here: ArtUK
