A meticulously observed and skillfully drafted study with a well balanced composition and attractive, delicate colouring.

 

James Edward Backhouse was born into a  distinguished Quaker family from Darlington, County Durham. His family home was Hurworth Grange (as inscribed to the reverse) which was a wedding present from his uncle and was designed by Alfred Waterhouse (the architect of the Natural History Museum).
